Claire was authentic before it became fashionable. As she was true to herself, she made space to empathize with, care for and lift others. At Girl’s College, she was the spark that showed how life would be lived, at UCT she was the loving, fun and challenging – this was our time to break boundaries, to excel, to make the world better. Being ordinary was not an option. When Claire left for Ghana, all I knew was that I’d miss her, but , knowing she was out there moving, shaking and making good things happen was a given. Now she is held in God’s Merciful Hands, her star shining brightly.
Claire and I went to school together. I never knew such a carefree, wild, or happier spirit in my life. She was full of wonderful mischief and so much fun. Gone so soon. My deepest condolences to the family. Claire will definitely be missed.
Rest in Peace sister and um really sorry to the family left behind may the Lord God touch your hearts and all friends here who loved and cherished so much may everyone be healed of the loss
Claire was always up to something when we were at GC. Do you remember that day she got us stuck in an elevator? She pressed random buttons and the lift seemed as though it was going up and down repeatedly. We were screaming in there! When the doors eventually opened, in our mad rush to get out, Claire ended up sprawled on the floor in front of some random person. How we laughed as we ran out of the building!
Rest in peace, Claire. I have nothing but fond memories from the years we spent together. Praying that the family are comforted during this difficult time 🕊️🙏🏽
I had the uplifting opportunity of getting to spend a few afternoons with Claire in Nairobi, and feel her positive energy and contagious laughter elevate me and all those around her. She was truly a benevolent spirit who I feel blessed to have crossed paths with in this lifetime.
May her soul rest in peace.
Back in Brighton, Claire didn’t feel like going out one night. I did. So much so that I told her that I’ll pay and we can go to that Japanese seafood buffet she’d been eyeing for weeks. I hated seafood. Once we got there we discovered any dish ordered with food remaining on it has to be paid for in full. We ordered dozens of dishes. After a few sushi rolls, Claire announced she couldn’t eat anymore. To avoid the heavy additional fees, I ate and ate. Claire evidently could see my agony. As I sat there reluctantly eating, Claire was falling off her chair with laughter. Claire and I argued a lot about seemingly big things, but in the end, it’s the small things that matter. I miss my friend. – Chris

Rest in perfect peace with the Angels dearest Claire
Rest in power little sister. God’s time is always our time
My heart is so heavy with the passing of Claire …. She was so bold & brave. A beautiful soul whose heart was so big that it literally covered me with warmth every time we were together. I met her in CT at a seminar she hosted & from that day….i can’t count the hours & hours i have endured of lectures on empowerment, power dynamics, privilege etc…. i went from being a happy go lucky party dude, to an enlightened & aware black man. She had an impact on me that i can’t measure. Not only did she become a close friend, but someone i idolized & looked up to…. Sending my condolences to her family & friends for such a big loss. I’m saddened that we had lost touch in the last few years & i didn’t know what she was going through. May her beautiful soul rest in peace. Mpumzi Pasiya – East London, South Africa

Dear Mathonsi Family,
I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Claire Mathonsi. My heart goes out to you during this incredibly difficult time.
May you find comfort in the words of Psalm 34:18, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” May God’s presence be your strength and solace in the days ahead.
As you grieve, may you also celebrate Claire’s life and the memories you shared with her. May you find peace in the knowledge that she is now at rest with her Lord, as promised in Revelation 21:4, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Please know that you are not alone in your grief. You are surrounded by loved ones who care for you deeply, and you are in my thoughts and prayers.
May God comfort you, may He give you peace, and may He surround you with His love.
With deepest condolences.

I knew Claire when we were establishing the SANAC women’s sector with Steve Letsike and the late Prudence Mabele. She worked tirelessly to make things happen. She believed in the cause of women and why development can’t be achieved without women. We became friends because we shared this belief. Where she led she left a mark. She was one person even if you don’t touch base for 3 months- when you do it would be as if you spoke yesterday. I am not okay- when I was in Kigali last week I sent a message to ask if you would be there. There was no response- it was the day you went to meet our Lord. Rest in power Claire. You fought a good fight. And thank you for touching so many lives in your journey.
Rest in power little sister. God’s time is always our time
May her soul rest in eternal peace
