Deepest sympathy to Deirdre and to the extended Hipwell Family on the Passing of Dave recently in Harare . Eileen & I remember the crazy days of our youth in the 1970’s with a good group of Irish who congregated in The Catholic Centre beside Harare Cathedral . Dave & Phil , like ourselves were immersed in the activities of The Mashonaland Irish Association . Dave entertained us all with his Court Case involving The Midnight Cowboy which was well publicised in The Rhodesian Herald at the time . The Hipwells were involved at the highest levels in Rugby , Terenure College , with two Carmelite Priests in the Family . Farewell to a Gentleman of Integrity . Sincerely , Muriel & Ken Ryan , Dalkey , Ireland

Your father was a good inspiration to Ross and I.

Ross enjoyed chatting to him about his time in the drc and when he was a fireman on the railways. Ross was also a fireman on the railways
The train drivers thought they were better than the fireman so they did not speak to them.

Your dad decided to sort that out.

So he put one shovel of coal into the engine and one overboard. When the engine came to a halt a few miles from the station. The train driver had to take the blame.

    Best wishes.

My mother (Mrs Anna Shaw) and I are watching this live from New Zealand. A lovely service and a particularly fine eulogy from my wonderful friend Deirdre. Such a tribute to a unique man. Sincere condolences and much love to the whole Hipwell family, from the Shaws.

Jack and myself watched the livestream mass this morning. We were so pleased to be able to participate and felt close to the family on your huge loss. We will always remember Dave very fondly. As Turlough rightly said he was a giant of a man in every way. His generosity and zest for life knew no bounds. It was very fitting that he had a billionaire’s death. He would have been very pleased with the send off. We were so pleased to see that Máiréad could make it back from the UK. Our heartfelt sympathy to all the family.
    Kindest thoughts.
    Mary and Jack
